Every time we hear the word 3M, we usually associate that with the reflective panelling used in sneakers. Officially known as Scotchlite Reflective, this shiny material adds an extra spice to any sneaker, regardless if it is a legacy model or a new one.

While brands have used this material often, Nike Sportswear went all-in by collaborating with 3M for a By You (aka custom sneakers via Nike’s website) collection, letting customers use Scotchlite Reflective and Thinsulate Insulation in personalizing your own React Vision, Air Force 1 Low, or Air Max 95.

“This was an opportunity for Nike to interact with technologies across many of 3M’s businesses,” said 3M UX creative director Robert Quintero, sharing how Nike took notice of their A Pinnacle of Reflection art installation in 2019 during the Milan Design Week. “They wanted to enter the candy shop through one door.”

Aside from Nike, 3M has partnered with other brands for its materials: adidas and Brooks for Scotchlite Reflective, and Askov Finlayson for Thinsulate.

“At the end of the day, we apply our technologies to make products more impactful, and this collaboration with Nike is a great example of that,” 3M Global Marketing Manager Ryan Gallagher adds.
