When two or more A-list actors come together, there is great potential for magic to happen on the big screen. However, at times, the presence of several big names doesn’t excuse poor writing or an unsuccessfully executed plot. Netflix‘s latest action/comedy, Red Notice deals with an Interpol agent who attempts to hunt down and capture the world’s most wanted art thief.

Despite the fact that its cast includes some of the most well-renowned actors of our generation such as Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds, and Dwayne Johnson, the magic fails to happen. We review Red Notice and explain why this movie might be one of Netflix’s worst movies to date.

Lack of Originality

Straight off the bat, Red Notice brings quite literally nothing new to the table. The tale of a major burglary is decades old. In fact, Red Notice is very closely parallel to 1964’s The Pink Panther where European thief, Sir Charles Lytton aims to steal the “Pink Panther” diamond and runs into his nephew, George who has similar plans.

While trying to educate our generation with classic stories is a noble act, at least introduce something new to make the film stand its ground. Especially considering the star-studded cast, the budget is no issue to limit the storytelling and possible areas of creativity. That way, kids who watch Red Notice won’t be telling a story of a predictable heist, but they’ll be telling a tale of unpredictable twists and turns.

Absence of Purpose

What proves to be successful on the big screen is presenting something relatable to the audience. For example, in Avengers: Infinity War, we were all at the edge of our seats because in our minds we were thinking, “What if my family is lost when Thanos snaps his fingers?”. Having some form of personal investment as viewers makes any movie that much greater.

On the flip side, Red Notice lacks any form of purpose. So what if the three eggs are in the possession of John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) or not? Since it doesn’t have any effect whatsoever on us, we simply don’t care about what happens. And to be frank, it seems like the actors themselves couldn’t care less either.

Chemistry Between Reynolds and Johnson

Focusing on the silver lining, probably one of the only things that the directors and producers of Red Notice got right was putting Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson together. Throughout the film, we got to see an entertaining dynamic that juggled between serious and witty personalities.
However, it is unfortunate that this type of organic acting wasn’t met with a strong script. Rawson Marshall Thurber, writer and director of Red Notice, fails to give justice to the capabilities of Reynolds and Johnson and leading men.

Red Notice Review Verdict

If you’re contemplating whether or not to watch Netflix’s Red Notice, all we can say is that it depends on what you’re watching it for. If you’re signing into Netflix because you’re hungry for a quality film of cat and mouse, you’re better off watching Steven Spielberg’s Catch Me If You Can. However, if you’re after a movie that you can play in the background while preparing food or entertain your little cousins on a rainy day, then by all means check out Red Notice. With all that being said, this question pops up in our minds: How could things go so wrong?
