Netflix‘s most-watched show ever, Squid Game, took the world by storm soon after it was released in September of 2021. While the title had a considerable amount of hype prior to its official release, the show’s success only manifested after a plethora of memes and reactions surfaced on the internet, leaving those who haven’t watched it feeling like they were missing out. And to be brutally honest, they were. However, because the brutal free-for-all series was only composed of nine episodes (or 8.5 episodes because one episode is very short), it wasn’t difficult for viewers to binge-watch the entire show in one or two sittings. This left majority of Squid Game fans screaming for more. Finally, those screams were heard, particularly by Hwang Dong-hyuk (Squid Game’s writer and director) as he has just confirmed Squid Game Season 2 is inevitable.

Squid Game Recap and Impact

For those who have yet to watch the show, be sure to check out our spoiler-free review of Squid Game.

To recap, the Korean drama tells the story of 456 financially struggling citizens as they are invited to play a mysterious competition with the stakes on an all-time high. Little do they know, the competition is composed of traditional children’s games that must be completed with a huge cash prize in store for the winner. The price and each game come at a cost however when the participants discover that they are also playing for their lives as well.

While the show’s purpose on Netflix is to entertain its audience, a more important purpose of the series is to showcase the injustices faced by the less fortunate citizens of pretty much every country. It is for this reason, that the show made such a big impact on its viewers alongside the rush of adrenaline they experienced while watching the plot unfold.

Squid Game Season 2, Confirmed

It’s time to rejoice as Squid Game Season 2 is no longer just a wishful thought, rather it’s an inevitable release. This comes as the show’s writer and director had this to say:

“There’s been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season, so I almost feel like you leave us no choice… It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently.”
– Hwang Dong-hyuk

While Netflix is yet to give their official statement regarding the release of a second season, a contract renewal between both parties seems like a no-brainer considering the success and revenue Squid Game has brought about.

Squid Game Season 2 Storyline

While we are still in the very early stages of Squid Game Season 2, there are several possible storylines that Hwang Dong-hyuk and new writers can choose to take. Among these potential storylines is a prequel to Squid Game‘s first season wherein the show focuses more on Hwang Jun-ho’s background of becoming a police officer. According to Hwang Dong-hyuk, “I think the issue with police officers is not just an issue in Korea. I see it on the global news that the police force can be very late on acting on things”.

Whichever direction is taken, however, Hwang Dong-hyuk has promised us that Seong Gi-Hun will come back in an attempt to make the world a better place. For now, it is up to our imagination to think about the best way season 2 can be executed to live up to the hype once more.
